Pre-launch Squarespace checklist
Before you launch your Squarespace website into the world it’s important to go through a thorough pre-launch checklist to ensure that it’s working as effectively as possible. You need to make sure that your site is free of glitches, particularly in ‘mission critical’ areas such as your online shop and your contact form.
You also need to ensure that vital SEO tasks are taken care of to ensure that your site performs as well as possible in the search results.
The user experience
Any web design checklist should pay close attention to the overall user experience. This means checking for broken links, ensuring that links open in a new window and making sure that share buttons are activated. It also means taking a broader look at the design overall to ensure that it’s responsive. Part of this will include how it performs on different browsers and mobile devices.
Loading speed
The easiest way to lose would-be site visitors is if your site or any of its pages are slow to load. To reduce your bounce rate you should check your speed using tools such as Pingdom, as well as checking page and image size, switch on Accelerated Mobile Web Pages and reduce URL redirects. You should also remove any unnecessary custom code.
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
The importance of SEO to your pre-launch checklist can’t be overstated. Before you launch your website you should undertake a thorough SEO check. This means ensuring that your site has all of the SEO components that search engine crawlers are looking for.
Meta descriptions should be added to every page, using targeted keywords. Titles and contents should be keyword optimised, and the site should include a sitemap. Your business information should be included and URLs need to be kept short. Crucially, you need to make sure that your website is mobile-friendly.
Security & GDPR Compliance
Your website needs to be as secure as possible and that it meets basic GDPR requirements. Your website's SSL certificate needs to be activated, a cookie banner should be added, and analytics and performance cookies should be disabled.
Every website needs a privacy policy that details the GDPR’s consumer data rights. This should be taken care of when you’re undertaking your pre-launch website checklist.
